This laser printer is very economical in my opinion. To figure cost per page, just take the cost of the toner cartridge and divide by the yield (page output) (at normal 5% coverage for text). But unlike my previous laser or my new inkjet, I wouldn't really notice or care if someone else is printing while working right next to it.TONER & COSTFor me, cost is the major draw for using laser. The printer is very quiet, but not silent. I was amazed to find that duplexing works with the plain 20lb multi-purpose paper that I buy. But with duplex printing it has to suck the page back in, and however fast, it can't pipeline the next page to be printing while the first is on its way out. With single-side printing it can pipeline and keep the pages coming. If you print a lot, you probably don't want to slow it down by duplex printing which takes more than twice as long, but in home use isn't even noticeable. Even duplex printing is pretty darn fast. It really outputs the first page as fast as claimed, whether USB or network.

The manual, instructions, and setup were great.SPEED, DUPLEX, & NOISEThis printer is amazingly fast.

This is actually answered in the troubleshooting guide in the manual which is how we figured it out, so kudos to a good manual.

The trick is that you have to go to the 'finishing' menu and select it there. On Mac, there is a 2-sided printing option that is grayed out and makes you think not possible. But on Mac, you cannot turn it on by default at all, and is a little confusing to turn on until you learn.

But this setting resides in each Windows PC the driver is installed to, not a printer default. On Windows you can easily turn on duplex printing by default and make it optional to disable each time you print. Due to faster single-side printing, duplex is off by default and up to each time you print you can change printing preference to turn on. I found the Windows driver easy to configure. Scanning is supposedly more limited over the network, but for pure printing it is effortless on both Windows & Mac.

I connected 3 computers, 1 Windows XP desktop by both USB & network, 1 Windows XP laptop by network, and 1 MacBook Pro running Mac OS X (10.6.4) by network. Also consider that toner doesn't dry up, require head cleaning, or expire in the same way that ink does.SETUPIt is effortless to plug in the ethernet network cable or USB (or both), then just run the setup CD on any computer that needs to connect by either means. You can always cover with tape, which I do anyway, but some bar codes cannot be covered by tape to be read properly. This is especially important to me for shipping labels. Also, laser prints don't run when wet (although inkjets claim to resist running, and varies by ink). However, for printing anything else that doesn't need to be color, nothing beats laser in cost or crispness of gray-scale & text. Nothing beats printing maps for directions in color or recipes with pictures in color for a recipe binder, cards, etc. With duplex 2-sided printing, toner doesn't affect the paper at all compared to inkjets that need to dial back ink on each side due to saturation if double sided and risk paper handling for plain paper. This printer is perfect, assuming monochrome is okay for you.INKJET VERSUS LASERInkjets just can't beat the crisp output of laser toner perfectly fused to the paper versus ink that saturates (but honestly can come very close).

It effortlessly connects to your network (wired only).Ĭomputers on the network can easily install it & use it (Windows & Mac). The duplex (2-sided printing) works perfectly on my plain paper. It is very quiet compared to my previous Dell laser (1100) or my new. It is amazingly fast, especially with the first page out as it claims.
